Mathilde Bayle was born in Toulouse in 1979 to a family of musicians. She learnt to play the violin and chamber music and studied literature before moving on to cinema. She got a degree in cinema in Paris and starting making documentaries and short films independently before working in post-production. She set up a group of young filmmakers, called Nanafilms, with director of photography Sarah Blum. In 2008, she joined the Fémis screenwriting workshop, where she wrote a feature film screenplay, Un petit garçon, which is currently being rewritten. In 2011, she made La Chambre du nord, a short fiction film produced by the GREC, then in 2012 Le Maillot de bain (The Swimming Trunks), produced by Les Films du Cygne and selected for its screenplay at the Moulin d’Andé.
